Biography

As a member of the College’s Advising Team, Avery has oversight over orientation and ongoing academic support for the Transfer and Resumed Undergraduate Education (TRUE) community which supports Transfer, RUE, Visiting, and Veteran Students. Serving as the primary program contact for students, staff, and faculty, Avery ensures that students are supported throughout their academic pursuits. As the Program Advisor, Avery has successfully scaled these initiatives, building out a comprehensive framework that oversees orientation, academic advising support, and a robust peer advising program, fostering a campus community deeply marked by equity, diversity, anti-racism, and inclusion.

Avery’s leadership at Brown also includes serving as the Undergraduate Program Manager for Diversity & Inclusion, The Transfer, RUE, and E-Gap Program Manager, as well as the Assistant Director of the Emergency Gap Program. In the latter role, Avery led the College’s Emergency Gap Program and efforts to assist students navigating urgent financial needs, developing numerous innovative pilots and targeted programs designed to support high-need student populations. Enhancing this expertise, Avery completed a certificate in Applied DEI Leadership from Brown University in 2023.

Before coming to Brown, Avery worked for the Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C., managing operations related to the Center’s domestic research agenda alongside diversity-related initiatives. Prior to that, Avery spent over five years in various roles defining and improving student success at Kent State University, including serving as the Special Assistant for Diversity & Inclusion Leadership for the Vice President. Avery earned a B.S. in Education and an M.Ed. in Cultural Foundations from Kent State University. In his spare time, Avery enjoys spending time with his cat, exercising, and cooking gluten free food.
