Team Enhanced Advising and Mentoring

Team Enhanced Advising and Mentoring (TEAM) is an interdisciplinary advising collective of highly committed and skilled advisors interested in making a difference for students at Brown University.

Building Holistic and Inclusive Advising Practices

At the heart of Brown's undergraduate advising initiatives is Team Enhanced Advising and Mentoring (TEAM). TEAM, which began in 2009, is a community of Exploratory advisors that works with first-year and sophomore students. The overall goal of the TEAM program is to support advisors in their advising efforts so that all students, and especially those from historically underrepresented communities, can thrive at Brown. Our assessments to date indicate that we are realizing this goal and that the program so far has had a very positive impact on both advisors and students. 

TEAM members meet in a seminar during the academic year to discuss major issues with colleagues, to listen to and learn from invited speakers, and to become familiar with important resources on campus.  We started with just one such “team” of about a dozen advisors in 2009. Since then, hundreds of faculty and staff advisors from across the University have committed to participate in, and contribute to, the program.

Our hope is that TEAM participants will attend at least four (4) of the scheduled meetings throughout the academic year.

The overall goal of the TEAM program is to support advisors in their advising efforts so that all students, and especially students from historically underrepresented communities, can thrive at Brown. We also aim to: 

  • Enrich the advising experience for faculty and students
  • Achieve 100% Good Academic Standing for TEAM participants’ assigned advisees at the end of the first year

The TEAM meeting format is structured, but informal. Participants will have input into the structure of the meeting, with the goal of ensuring that our shared experiences are meaningful, engaging, and enriching. During each meeting, we: 

  • Discuss assigned readings and case studies
  • Share our expertise and our challenges
  • Brainstorm advising strategies

A syllabus, including required and suggested readings, and our discussion schedule, will be shared with participants in September, prior to the first TEAM meetings of the academic year.
